A Bodycon Dress or, Why I Work Out

It is not every day that I wear a bodycon dress. In fact, most days I prefer chocolate and pasta to bodycon. But, it so happens that lately I’ve been doing my Tracy Anderson meets Justin Gelband by way of YouTube workouts and so feeling the drive to leverage this window and wear a tight little something (before the chocolate and pasta win). The something I’m wearing here is an old Forever 21 dress. Incidentally one should never use the term “vintage” to describe something from Forever 21 no matter how long you’ve owned it. Just call it old like I did. It might not sound appealing but at least this way you will avoid offending your fashion savvy friends. But I digress. The dress is electric blue with a little sparkle, and it does what every self respecting bodycon dress does and demands attention. I think I’ll take her out for a spin. Care to join?

Street Stylin’ in a Long Dress

New York Fashion week is in full swing and so too, therefore, are the myriad, dogged and devoted street style photographers. And thank goodness for them. It’s a feeding frenzy out there and I for one am voraciously consuming the photographic evidence. Some of my favorite street style looks of late have incorporated long, voluminous skirts and dresses, so I decided to wear one. There’s nothing like a long dress to create drama and command attention, but I think too many of us wear them too infrequently. Do not relegate your long dresses to awards show red carpets or Coachella shenanigans (you see how distorted my lens is here in LA?). Liberate yourself from convention and wear these ladies out day and night, casual or dressy. Then tell me all about it. Seriously, I want to know. Comment below. Thanks.

I try to “own my power” and “beat to my own drum” and otherwise elevate myself to the standards set by a wide array of Twitter-friendly inspirational quotes. But sometimes I wander off into the reeds, as my dad would say. You see, I’m guilty of engaging in that great confidence-sapping mind game called comparison. I look around at my friends, (former) colleagues, and contemporaries and it’s hard not to measure my life against their’s and wonder if I’m falling short. If I’m seated second row at a fashion show, have I failed at life? Hmmm… This time-sucking activity (oh social media how I love/hate you!) can skew our collective perspectives and lead to things like trying to act cool; something at which I fail miserably. I know, I should know better. Alas, I’m only human. Thankfully there is a surefire cure for these self-doubting distractions and it’s called (say it with me), gratitude! So let me start by expressing my gratitude to you. Thank you for following along and sharing in my early adventures in the blogosphere. Let’s march forward together feeling grateful every single day for the many blessings in our lives. And in the immortal words of a one Rihanna “shine bright like a diamond”. Oh, and, it doesn’t hurt if you do it this season in a pair of killer thigh high boots. Mine are Stella McCartney.
