The Only Dress You Need

Amanda Garrigus Zara LBD

Ok, the title is misleading because, let’s face it, we need a lot of dresses. (I use the word “need” here rather loosely. Other examples of similar usage include: “I need chocolate,” and, “I need to lie on the beach.”) That said, one really versatile little black dress can go a long way, even if it’s short, like this knit, crew neck, short sleeve mini dress from Zara. I love the ribbing and how the skirt flares out just enough to be forgiving, and flattering on a lot of body types. My boots are an old favorite from Costume National and I think they work quite nicely. They remind me of a pair of killer Celine boots Kendall Jenner sported around a lot last Fall. (Props to her stylist, and old friend, Monica Rose.) In summation, invest in an LBD, or don’t (mine cost $23), but make sure you have one.

Under Armour and Hiking for Peace

Amanda Garrigus Wearing Under Armour

If you’ve listened to the news at all in the last few days, weeks, months, years… you’ll know that our world is experiencing a lot of tumult. From climate change, earthquakes and tsunamis, to acts of violence in places of peace, it can all feel like too much. Whether we know it or not, we all bear the emotional weight of those discordant events. I often feel like a beast of burden, trying to sort out how best to bear my load. Things had been going along pretty well and then the sun set on Paris on November 13, and my knees buckled. Too much to bear. But I’m a mom of two beautiful girls, and knee-buckling isn’t a luxury I can afford. So what to do? I head for the hills. The Hollywood Hills to be precise. I have been hiking the dusty trails of Runyon Canyon for nearly twenty years, and in all that time its mountains and valleys, vistas and inclines have never ceased to renew my energy and simultaneously strengthen my mind and my body. Exercise and time in nature, it’s a powerful one two stress relieving punch. Did the hike make it all better? Well, for a little while it did give me a sense of peace, something I pray the world can have more of. #PrayforParis #PrayforPeace

The Slip Dress

Amanda Garrigus Silk Slip Dress

The slip dress was one of the most widely agreed upon trends to emerge from the Fall 2015 collections. Everyone from Celine to Rag & Bone sent the barely-there, flowy new-essential down the runway. I can’t say I was happy about it initially. I mean, I didn’t do so well with the trend the first time around in the late ’90s. And don’t let anyone tell you it’s “easy to wear” either. It’s not. Unless you have, a) a model body, b) an “I don’t care” attitude, or c) a whole lotta ruffles down the front of said dress. I fit into category “c”. This vintage piece, swiped from the closet of my friend, the amazing woman and actress Debi Mazar, hides many abdominal sins while still highlighting many a great asset. It shimmers, it flows, it drapes over the body’s contours with just enough suggestion like a good slip dress should. Will you be wearing this trend? Are you in a slip dress as you read this? Do tell!
