Wearing The Pants

Today I’ve got my big girl pants on. Lately it seems I’ve needed them more often. The state of the world isn’t getting any less challenging, and I’m marching alongside my fellow humans to do what I can to make a positive impact. I won’t get into politics, but suffice it to say the political climate in our country and abroad forces positive action. I’m not doing anything drastic or dramatic, these pants weren’t made for lying in front of tanks after all, but in my own small way I’m lending my voice and leaning in. I call Senators with some regularity, I sign petitions nearly daily and sometimes, when I’m lucky, I even get my hands a little dirty. Like on a recent school day when my daughter and her classmates and I, alongside a few game teachers and parents, visited an underserved school in Los Angeles to help beautify their campus. We planted gardens and painted rainbow stripes along their track and field run. It was hard work, it really took it out of me, and I haven’t felt so good at the end of a day in a long while. The moral here? Put on your big girl pants and lend a hand and your voice wherever you can in support of whatever cause is meaningful to you. It’s good for you, and good for the world.

With love,

Amanda

Spring Part 1

Amanda Luttrell Garrigus wearing a vegan leather pale blue mini skirt from Zara

As soon as I laid eyes on this little pale blue vegan leather skirt, I thought, Spring! Which made me very happy. Another spring has sprung and life is in full bloom. In spite of a few setbacks and health scares (my mom got sick and had to have her kidney removed in an emergency surgery that left our family reeling, and my best friend and sister just moved away to Atlanta), I am optimistic and celebrating this turn of season with all the verve of someone who knows just how lucky she is to be alive, in love, and in LA. So I figured I’d dress the part and pair this little ruffled number with a puff-sleeved T-shirt and a pair of fringe sandals. Looking forward to what’s next.

With love,

Amanda

Military Jacket and a Moment of Peace

I overthink things. I just do. So when I thought about wearing this military jacket, I couldn’t help but consider the symbolism and implications of the now-trendy topper. Am I disrespecting the sacrifices of our men and women in the armed forces if I turn their symbol of pride into a mere trifle that matches my mood on a given day? Worse still, am I sending an aggressive message? (I wasn’t kidding when I said I overthink things.) In the end I decided that if I wear a military jacket with the right intention, a spirit of pride and respect for those who risk everything in defense of peace, then maybe I could get on board. And so here it is. The object of my obsessive ruminating. Reconciled as I am to my peaceful position, I now love it. Plus I decided to wear it halfway, off the shoulder if you will, ’cause it’s a thing right now. Just ask Joan Smalls, or Gigi Hadid.

With love,

Amanda
